Same Sex Marriage Debate In Australian Parliament Pushed Back To Allow More Time To Gather Support, Greensboro North Carolina City Council To Consider Resolution Opposing Proposed Constitutional Amendment Banning Same Sex Marriage, Christian Crazy Calls For Starbucks Boycott Based On Bad Math And A Quote From Romans, Trevor Donovan Nude, 90210 Male Hotness, Francisco Lachowski, Justin Bieber

In Australia, the debate in Parliament over same sex marriage will be pushed back to later in the year to give advocates for change more time to garner enough support to have legislation for same sex marriage passed. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, instead of the debate being held immediately - which would have seen the bill defeated - the gay marriage campaign has changed focus to increase pressure on Tony Abbott to change his mind and allow opposition MPs a conscience vote. “The Coalition went to the last election as the party promising more individual freedom and less government interference in home life. Those values are consistent with a conscience vote on marriage equality,” the national convener of Australian Marriage Equality, Alex Greenwich, said. The Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young is likely to gain opposition support for an inquiry into gay marriage legislation when Parliament returns this week. “A Senate inquiry will provide an opportunity to address the concerns of undecided and conflicted MPs, especially on issues like guaranteeing religious freedom and the drawbacks of civil unions,” Mr Greenwich said. Gay marriage proponents will meet opposition MPs this week to try to put pressure on the Opposition Leader to reverse his decision not to allow Coalition members a conscience vote. There is purportedly a pragmatic view within the Coalition that it would be best to resolve the issue once and for all while Labor is in government. Some Coalition MPs believe that if legislation is defeated this year it would be reintroduced at some point in the future and, assuming the Coalition wins the next election, they do not want to be dogged by the issue in government as Labor was last year. Labor MP Stephen Jones, the author of a private member's bill to legalise same sex marriage, declined to comment on the timing of his bill. The bill is likely to be introduced in late March. Even if Abbott allowed a conscience vote it is uncertain whether there would be sufficient support within the Coalition for legislation to pass. But Greenwich believes enough MPs are supportive of change. ''Based on the unstoppable momentum for a reform that continues to win hearts and minds in the wider community and the parliament, marriage equality could be a reality in 2012,'' he said. Labor has adopted marriage equality as its official policy, but granted a conscience vote to its MPs.

The Greensboro, North Carolina City Council will consider Tuesday whether to publicly state their opposition to a proposed state constitutional amendment to ban same sex marriage, My Fox 8 reporting that item 33 of the published council agenda reads "Resolution opposing a proposed amendment to the North Carolina State Constitution." The amendment, which goes before voters during the May 8 primary, would define marriage as only between a man and a woman. Mayor Robbie Perkins said a majority of council is in favor of the resolution. Perkins said the amendment is a "distraction" and "something we should not be voting on." Councilman Zack Matheny agrees."We need to focus on jobs and the economy and our budgets, and amending the constitution on this regard quite frankly has been a waste of time," Matheny said. Perkins and Matheny said they have concerns that the amendment could keep city from providing any more benefits, such as health insurance, to gay and lesbian partners of city workers. Supporters of the amendment said it's necessary to keep a judge from overturning the state law, which has happened in other states. The resolution is expected to come up to a vote Tuesday. If it passes, Greensboro would be the third prominent city council in the state to publicly oppose the amendment. Raleigh and Chapel Hill have already passed similar resolutions.

A “Christian” pastor is calling for a nationwide boycott of Starbucks for the company's support of same sex marriage in Washington. According to KING 5, in a message published online a day before Washington's Senate passed a bill to legalize same sex marriage, Pastor Steven Andrew of USA Christian Ministries predicted that the Seattle-based coffee giant could lose 80-percent of its customers if Christians get their coffee somewhere else -- a number he bases on his contention that 80-percent of Americans are Christian while just 1-to-2 percent of the population is homosexual. Starbucks is one of more than 100 companies that pledged support for legalizing gay marriage in Washington. “Starbucks is no longer fashionable,” writes Andrew in the post, which is headlined "Christians Boycott Starbucks – Because Romans 1 Explains Starbucks Hates God," Andrew argues that, “If your church still uses Starbucks, then your pastor is a friend of the world. God calls those who oppose Him ‘haters of God.’” Echoing the sentiment of "hate the sin, love the sinner," Andrew also writes, “Jesus loves homosexuals.” Andrew calls on Christians to share the boycott with their church congregations, adding, “Starbucks can follow Satan if they want to." Washington's state House is expected to pass the same sex marriage legislation next week, and Governor Chris Gregoire (D) has said she will sign it. Opponents have vowed to put the measure before voters in a referendum this November.
