The United States Senate late Monday overwhelmingly confirmed the first openly gay male federal judge in U.S. history, AFP reporting that Senators voted 80-13 to confirm Paul Oetken to the Federal District Court for the Southern District of New York. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy praised Oetken as "a superbly qualified nominee," and hailed President Barack Obama for the ground-breaking nomination. The vote arrives a month after New York became the latest -- and largest -- US state to legalize same-sex marriage, after Iowa, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont. A March poll found that 53 percent of Americans are in favour of allowing gay marriage. Other U.S. states, like California, offer same-sex civil unions, but not marriage rights. That means the parties have some but not all legal rights married couples have. Earlier this month, a federal court ruled that the US military had to immediately stop enforcing a ban on gays serving openly in uniform, even as the government prepared to scrap the policy.
A gay man was dragged out of his car and dumped half-naked after being duped into taking off his pants and underwear at a notorious homosexual meeting-place near Coventry, but, as The Coventry Telegraph reports, robber Lewis Harding was caught after he was seen driving the victim’s car the following day. Harding, 19, of Isis Grove, Kingshurst, had denied carrying out the robbery, but was found guilty by a jury at Leamington Crown Court by a majority of ten to two. His 45-year-old victim said that in January he drove to a lay-by on the A45 near the Stonebridge roundabout in Coventry. Giving evidence from a screened off witness box, he explained it was “an area the gay community frequent” – and confirmed that was why he had gone there. He parked his VW Golf and a young man tapped on the passenger window. He told the jury the young man asked him “Are you up for any fun?” Harding said they needed somewhere more private, and the victim told him there was a “lane down the bottom.” His phone rang as he was talking through the window, and he answered it and said ‘You always phone when I’m busy.’ The victim added “He walked off and then came back to the car. “He told me ‘let me have a look,’ so I showed him. He told me to take my trousers off, so I took them off and put them on the back seat of the car.” The victim said the young man’s phone then went again, and he answered and walked away, talking. “He came back and opened the car door and got in, and somebody else must have been coming up on the inside and got into the back. They told me to get out of the car. I said ‘No, you’re not having my car,’ but they kept on saying to get out.” The two men then dragged him out of the car, naked from the waist down, and dumped him at the side of the lay-by before driving off in his car. Fortunately, the victim still had his cell phone and was able to call the police. Harding was arrested the next day when officers saw him driving the man’s car in the Chelmsley Wood area. Adjourning the case for a pre-sentence report and remanding Harding in custody, Judge Robert Orme said: “This was a serious, unpleasant robbery involving a very vulnerable target. “This young man is likely to be going to custody for several years,” adding that the victim should be thanked “for the courageous way he came to court to give evidence when he was clearly very embarrassed and nervous.”
Fanshare.com is reporting that How I Met Your Mother’s Neil Patrick Harris, who plays Barney in the series, has joked that he is lining up the possibility of starring in a pro-same-sex marriage movie. Harris explained, "It all started with a joke. We were on break on the set of How I Met Your Mother, and Jason Segel was Google Imaging me to find that one shot of me on a unicorn. Instead, he happened upon a picture of me holding a double-barrel shotgun. I don't even remember when...anyway, he showed it to Allyson Hannigan, and she said, 'Hey, it's a homo with a shotgun!' I guess she had just seen the trailer for [the Rutger Hauer film] Hobo with a Shotgun, and thought it was a cute riff." He added that the "Next thing I know, somebody from Dimension [Films] is on the phone, and we're getting $20 million in funding from the State of New York to develop the picture. Amazing," Neil jested, "I won't say the phrase 'Squeal like a pig!' is in the script. But then again, I won't say it isn't, either. It's going to be a trip."
