Predictions That Same-Sex Marriage Will Produce Boom In Same-Sex Adoptions, Supreme Court Asked To Hear “Two Fathers” Adoption Case, Chile To Recognize Same-Sex Civil Unions, Diego Boneta, Chris Evans Rings The Bell

Adoption lawyers say they are preparing for a potential baby boom as same-sex couples emboldened by New York's new same-sex marriage law take the next step and try to adopt children, according to a report by The Associated Press. New York will allow same-sex marriages beginning July 24. Thousands of couples are expected to tie the knot. The state already permits unmarried couples to adopt children, whether they're gay or straight. But adoption experts say getting hitched often spurs couples to think about starting a family. Nationwide, about 19,000 gay couples had adopted children as of 2009. That's up from 10,700 couples in 2000, the same year Vermont became the first state to offer civil unions to gay couples.

A gay rights organization is seeking a Supreme Court review of the case of a gay couple who wanted both their names to appear on the birth certificate of the Louisiana child they adopted in New York, The Associated Press reporting that Lambda Legal said Monday it filed for court review in the case of adoptive parents Oren Adar and Mickey Ray Smith, who now reside in the Orlando, Florida area. The couple sued to get both their names on the certificate. Earlier this year, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favour of a Louisiana registrar who insisted only one father's name can go on the certificate. The appeals court said the registrar's refusal to place both names on the certificate does not deny legal recognition of the New York adoption by both men.

Chile’s government is preparing legislation that would legally recognize civil unions between gay couples, newspaper La Tercera reported today. Bloomberg News reports that the bill, which could be presented to Congress by next week, would grant legal rights to gay and lesbian couples who have lived together for more than one year, the Santiago-based newspaper reported, citing a copy of the draft legislation it obtained.
