23 Year Old Transgender Wins Breast Implant Radio Contest
What began as a seemingly grotesque sexist joke meant to attract listeners has ended in a remarkably inclusive, progressive manner, a radio contest in Calgary, Alberta offering to pay for a breast augmentation garnered commendation from several quarters for selecting a transgender individual to receive the prize, The Herald reporting that Avery Mitchell, who is currently transitioning from a man to a woman, was the overwhelming winner when 76-percent of over 30,000 online voters chose her to win the Breast Contest Ever held by Amp 90.3. “It’s absolutely unbelievable,” said Mitchell, 23. “It still hasn’t hit me just how great of a gift this is I’ve been given.” When the contest was announced in early June critics denounced it as objectifying women and encouraging body image dissatisfaction. A complaint was filed with the Ad Standards Council and the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council and the radio station was inundated with angry e-mails, Facebook messages and tweets. Among the 10 finalists wanting breast augmentation surgery was a woman who was scarred as a child, another who wanted a reduction and several mothers looking to regain their pre-pregnancy figures. Mitchell is currently undergoing hormone treatment and likely will not be ready for the breast surgery for at least a year.
