Tuesday, the Seventh United States Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Neuqua Valley High School students are allowed to wear “Be Happy, Not Gay” tee shirts, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. The court rejected Indian Prairie School District 204’s argument that school officials could prohibit students from wearing the shirts to prevent some students from having their feelings hurt. In its opinion, the court said a “school that permits advocacy of the rights of homosexual students cannot be allowed to stifle criticism of homosexuality. The school argued (and still argues) that banning ‘Be Happy, Not Gay’ was just a matter of protecting the ‘rights’ of the students against whom derogatory comments are directed,” the court said. “But people in our society do not have a legal right to prevent criticism of their beliefs or even their way of life.” Nate Kellum, senior counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund, a legal alliance of Christian attorneys who represented the students in the suit, responded: “In an environment that freely allows speech that promotes homosexual behaviour, the school simply cannot shut out the opposing viewpoint.” In April 2006, Heidi Zamecnik, a student at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, wore the tee shirt to school after the school permitted other students the previous day to wear shirts showing support for homosexuals as part of the “Day of Silence.” That event, promoted by the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network, hopes to draw attention to harassment of homosexuals.
Members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community attended a meeting Monday of the Anoka-Hennepin School District Board in Minnesota, ABC Newspapers reporting the contingent of gay activists spoke at a public forum demanding the board rescind its neutrality policy and provide the training necessary to address the needs of LGBT students. The meeting, according to the report, was at times raucous, at one point school district security called in to escort one especially energetic speaker from the room when she stood shouting and throwing her fisted hand toward board members as Chairman Tom Heidemann demanded “order in the board room.” In a prepared statement, Superintendent Dennis Carlson said that “Anoka-Hennepin supports gay-straight alliances and it will continue to provide training on preventing harassment and on how best to support GLBT students. We believe that no one in our schools should be harassed for any reason.” The gay community, however, contends that the policy of neutrality in fact “silences and isolates students because they are gay” and acts as “a censorship policy.”
Reuters reports on a new study conducted by the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute revealing that 50-percent of men ages 18 to 70 in Brazil, Mexico, and the United States have genital infection with human papillomavirus, known as HPV, supporting the argument for vaccinating boys against HPV. U.S. researchers said on Monday. United States vaccine advisers have been weighing whether boys and young men should be vaccinated against the human papillomavirus, already recommended for girls and young women, however some worry the vaccine is too costly to justify its use. HPV infection is best known as the primary cause of cervical cancer, the second most common cancer in women worldwide. But various strains of HPV also cause anal, penile, head and neck cancers. Vaccinating men and boys would prevent some of these cancers. Anna Giuliano of the H Lee Moffitt Cancer Center said that “We found that there is a high proportion of men who have genital HPV infections. At enrolment, it was 50 percent," said Giuliano, whose study appears online in the journal Lancet. The team also found that the rate at which men acquire new HPV infections is very similar to women.
