The University of Alaska Board of Regents voted Friday to approve a policy that bans discrimination based on sexual orientation, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports. The proposal, which passed 8-2, would add sexual orientation to a policy that already bans discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, veteran status, disability, marital status, pregnancy and parenthood. The University of Alaska already provides benefits to the same sex partners of employees. University spokeswoman Kate Ripley says the policy was not motivated by discrimination complaints but had been requested by students, faculty and staff for years.
In the aftermath of the disastrous public relations incident, Target Corporation announced it has revised its policy concerning political contributions, reports Bloomberg, following the controversy over its $150,000 donation to a business group that was backing a conservative Republican candidate for Minnesota governor. Support by the group, MN Forward, to Republican Tom Emmer angered gay rights groups that had seen Target as an ally. Emmer, who lost the race to Democrat Mark Dayton, was an opponent of same sex marriage and other gay-rights initiatives. Target spokeswoman Jessica Carlson says Thursday the company reviewed its donation policies following the controversy. Among the revisions is the establishment of a committee of senior executives responsible for guiding decisions about financial support of political activities. The committee will determine whether the company makes contributions directly to candidates, political parties or political committees like MN Forward.
A Vancouver bartender, Rob Goddard, originally from Smithers, British Columbia, has won the title of Mr. Gay Canada, and will now represent the country at the third annual Mr. Gay World competition to be held in the Philippines, on March 9th, reports the Vancouver Sun. Goddard, who says he moved to the city so he would be more readily accepted as a gay man, released a statement calling the win, "an incredible opportunity to meet courageous men from around the world who all have a unique story, and who want to make a difference in improving the human rights conditions that they face in their home country and around the world. It is a great honour to use the platform of 'Mr. Gay World' to share my experiences as a gay man privileged to come from a far less discriminating nation such as Canada - a country that borders a 'free' super-power country that is STILL divided over the rights and acceptance of non-straights.”
From Rufus Wainwright’s official web site, “Darling daughter Viva Katherine Wainwright Cohen was born on February 2, 2011 in Los Angeles, California to proud parents Lorca Cohen, Rufus Wainwright and Deputy Dad Jorn Weisbrodt. The little angel is evidently healthy, presumably happy and certainly very very beautiful. Daddy #1 would like to offer everyone a digital cigar and welcome the little lady in with a French phrase from his favourite folk song, A La Claire Fontaine: ‘Il y a longtemps que je t'aime, jamais je ne t'oublierai.’” Congratulations to all, and as an aside, Lorca Cohen is the daughter of Leonard Cohen, which makes the birth beyond meta.

Andy Cohen and sexy Sean Avery spotted out on a second date attending the Gilt Man dinner Wednesday in New York City, Avery telling New York magazine’s Vulture that he is “opening a new restaurant next door to Odeon, in Tribeca. In that pink townhouse right next door to Odeon. It's called Tiny's. I've kind of transferred my love of design and beauty into this restaurant. In my opinion it's the best-looking restaurant downtown.”
