Ugandan Police Claim David Kato Forced Killer Into Sodomy
Predictably, the suspect Ugandan police arrested Wednesday in connection to the killing of gay rights activist David Kato, allegedly told authorities Kato had coerced him into sodomy, the Daily Monitor reports. The 46 year old Kato was bludgeoned at his at home in Bukusa, in the Mukono District a week ago Wednesday, succumbing to his head injuries on route to a hospital. Police spokesperson Judith Nabokooba said that the suspect, Esubuga Enock, had been hiding in Nakabago village, in Mukono District. “It is true the suspect has been arrested but we need to record his statement first before giving a formal statement,” she said. However, the Daily Monitor quotes an unnamed police source, who says the suspect confessed to killing Kato because he reportedly grew tired of engaging in homosexual practices. “We have taken him to Mukono Magistrate’s Court to record an extrajudicial statement,” said the source. “He told us that he killed Kato after he failed to give him a car, a house and money he promised as rewards for having sex with him.” Kato is alleged to have bailed the suspect out of Kawuga Prison January 24th, where he had been remanded on charges of theft. Enock reportedly told police that he resided with Kato for two days, and accused Kato of having sex with him and promising to pay him. The suspect allegedly told police he grew tired of having sex with Kato, but that Kato “would not have any of his excuses.” The source says “The suspect said he left the bedroom, went to a store and picked up a hammer which he used to hit him while he was still in bed.” Immediately after Kato was killed, police denied any connection between his sexual orientation and the climate of anti-gay cultivated in the African country, saying the motive appeared to be robbery rather than homophobia.
