Uganda Police Arrest Man In Connection To David Kato Killing; Say Motive For Murder Was “Personal Disagreement”
Reuters is reporting that Ugandan police said Wednesday that a man has confessed to killing gay rights activist David Kato after a “personal disagreement” in an attack last week. Police spokesperson Vincent Ssetake told Reuters that “The prime suspect, Nsubuga Enock, was arrested today at around 4:00 pm when he went to visit his girlfriend. He has confessed to murder. It wasn’t a robbery and it wasn’t because Kato was an activist. It was a personal disagreement but I can’t say more than that.” Ssetake added that Enock would appear in court Wednesday evening. Last week, police said that Enock, whom they categorised as a “well-known thief,” had been staying with Kato after the activist bailed him out of jail on January 24th. Kato’s driver was also arrested in connection with the murder, almost immediately after the killing, although police could not confirm whether he had since been released. Gay rights activists told Reuters they were concerned that police may try to cover up a motive of homophobia to protect the Western aid upon which they country depends, and want substantive proof from police Kato was not killed over his sexuality.
