Thursday, the London Evening Standard reported on figures obtained by Dee Doocey, a Liberal Democrat member of the Police Authority that show there has been a noticeable increase in the number of reported homophobic incidents, 1,545 reported in 2010 as compared with 1,208 in 2007. Doocey said that “These figures are clear evidence of a very disturbing rise in hate crime. I am especially concerned about the huge rise in homophobic incidents.” She added that “Some of the rise may be down to an increase in reporting of incidents, but I fear this may not be the full explanation. It seems only now that we are starting to discover the real numbers of such serious offences.” Ben Summerskill, the chief executive officer of Stonewall, said “We’re deeply concerned that hate crime continues to overshadow the lives of so many gay Londoners. We hope the Mayor will continue to commit to becoming personally involved in tackling this blight. The Metropolitan Police Authority has taken huge steps forwards but there’s still too little evidence of real commitment from the very top.”

A 13 year veteran of the Douglas County Colorado Sheriff’s Department, Lieutenant Jeff Egnor resigned Tuesday after repeatedly posted what his superiors classified as homophobic, racist comments using his country computer, that according to a report by KMGH-NEWS7. According to Undersheriff Tony Spurlock, Egnor was confronted about hundreds of posting on area websites, including 7NEWS, and he chose to resign rather than be investigated. Spurlock said that “A large portion of it was very shocking and inappropriate racial comments, homophobic comments, statements of that nature," Spurlock said. "Our message is while you're here we want you to do your job and serve the community the very best that you can. If you have concerns politically, what happens in the world, you have to do it in an appropriate way and not relate it to this county sheriff's office.” Posting using the screen name Abu Mybutt, on December 20th, 2010, commenting on the Congressional repeal of the military policy prohibiting openly gay service personal, Egnor wrote, misspelling military, “New miltary slogans: The few, the queer, the Marines! Butt Rangers lead the way! Be as gay as you can be! Aim for a high hard one, Air Force! Join the Navy, see naked men!”Despite the fictitious screen name, Egnor made it clear that he worked in government, which led to complaints by readers. That led to an open records request to determine who was using the Douglas County Internet Provider address linked to the posts.

21 year old Matthew Francis, out on bail after being arraigned on charges including assault as a hate crime for his role in attack on a gay man in the bathroom of the historic Stonewall Inn in October, was arrested in Staten Island Monday for allegedly beating a homeless man two police officers, reports SILive.com. Francis and a friend, 19 year old Lattea Tate, were arrested early Monday morning after an alleged drug deal went bad. The pair fled the scene, but was arrested within a few minutes, Francis resisting arrest. Police say both men were intoxicated, and when an officer removed Francis’ handcuff while inside the police precinct, he punched the officer. He was arraigned Tuesday on two counts of second-degree assault, three counts of second-degree harassment, and a single count of third-degree assault and resisting arrest. He is being held on a $50,000 bail.

From the New York Post: “what closeted male small screen starts, who both have publicly dated actresses and other famous women, got stuck in a deep make-out session with each at a Super Bowl after-party in Dallas?”

Michael Ausiello, at TVLine.com has this blind item: “An imminent episode of a hit series will find a popular gay character wondering whether he might actually be — gasp — bi! The question of sexual disorientation arises after the confirmed bachelor has an encounter with a pivotal member of the opposite gender. (A close encounter, I’d imagine!) Afterwards, he’s forced to consider the possibility that he swings both ways. The curve ball is sure to spark controversy, as well as perhaps a little disappointment. But on the flip side, at least the show will be giving hope to the hetero female viewers who’ve long wished the character played for their team. But the hope may be fleeting. I’m told by the episode’s end, there will be some resolution. I just don’t know yet, er, which way it’ll go.”
