The Associated Press reports that 45 year old Frederic Guinta pleaded guilty Tuesday to an assault with a hate crime stipulation, after attacking a patron at Julius Bar, one of the oldest gay bars in New York City, on October 11th, 2010. According to police, the victim, a bartender at the historic gay bar, 38 year old Greg Davis, was attempting to intervene between Guinta and another patron, when Guinta hit Davis in the face, while disparaging his race and his sexual orientation. Earlier that evening, Guinta had attacked another man at another bar, and tried to steal his wallet. He pleaded guilty Tuesday to a charge of attempted robbery for in that incident. His attorney, Hershel Katz, said that Guinta’s actions were the result of inebriation, and not hatred, saying “He was drunk as a skunk and, basically, his stupidity kicked in, more than anything else. He doesn’t bear anyone ill will.” Guinta is being held in jail while he awaits sentencing in March, at which time he expected to sent to prison for three and half years.

The Associated Press reports that an annual gay pride festival is moving to downtown Detroit after being held in Ferndale, Michigan for the past ten years, organizers saying the move to Hart Plaza will allow the Motor City Pride Festival to attract a larger audience and expand to two days, running this year June 4th and 5th. The festival celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. In 2010, it attracted about 45,000. Dave Waite, chairman of the festival board, said that “Ferndale has been great to work with and it was a really hard decision to leave such a supportive city.” Ferndale officials said they were disappointed with the decision and that they could have accommodated expansion.
