A 6 year old boy was stabbed in the neck at a pre-school in Jonkoping, in central Sweden, after being the target of bullies for an extended period of time, reports the Local, quoting the Jonkoping-Posten Daily. The newspaper names the boy Oskar, and details how his fondness for pink clothing, ballet and nail polish left him a target for repeated bullying from other boys in his playgroup. Oskar complained to his parents that he had been routinely called “gay” and “girl” and that he complained he was regularly excluded from the playgroup and pull from a climbing frame. Last week, the 6 year old suffered an injury after being stabbed with a blunt knife. The school did not report the incident to the boy’s parents (Oskar told his parents), and school officials classified the assault as a “small incident.” The parents have removed Oskar, and transferred him to another school, and reporting the matter to government agency monitoring schools. His mother said “I don’t want to have my child at a school which considers a stab with a knife to be a ‘small incident.’”
AnnArbour.com reports on House Bill 4249, introduced Monday, sponsored by Representative Jeff Irwin (Democrat-Ann Arbour) that would expand Michigan’s adoption laws to include same sex couples. Currently, only a single person or a married couple can adopt a child, while a step-parent can adopt a biological or adopted child of his or her spouse. Irwin said “Gays and lesbians don’t have the same rights as heterosexual couples. I think it’s discriminating and there’s no legal basis for it.” Irwin announced the bill at the Washtenaw County Administration Building surrounded by mostly mothers, among them Shannon Atkinson, who said that if a gay or lesbian couple’s relationship ends after they have agreed to raise a child together, the non-biological or non-adoptive parent has no legal right to child custody. She and a former partner had a child using a sperm donor before their relationship end, the partner the biological mother. Their daughter Annalise is now 9 years old. Monday Atkinson explained that she was allowed by the ex-partner to maintain a relationship until the girl was 4, but has not seen Annalise in five years. “I love my daughter to this day and I hope when she’s 18 I can see her again.”
In Washington, the Spokesman Review reports that state Senator Ed Murray (Democrat-Seattle) introduced Senate Bill 5793, while Representative Jim Moeller (Democrat-Vancouver) said that he will introduce a complimentary bill in the House Tuesday, both bills an attempt to legalize same sex marriage in the state. The bill would overturn the Defense of Marriage Act, passed over then-Governor Gary Locke’s veto in 1998. Murray said “We've made tremendous progress since 1998,” Murray said. “Gay and lesbian families in Washington now enjoy the same state spousal rights that their married straight friends enjoy – except for the name ‘marriage’. The recognition that their loving, lifelong commitment is no different from the loving, lifelong commitment of straight couples is the final step to achieving full equality. I believe the Legislature and the public are both ready to take that final step.”
A blind item, via Blind Gossip, that is a tad obvious: “Men would be shocked – and women would be heartbroken – to learn that this popular and good-looking athlete has already given his heart away… to another man. His salary and endorsement deals are far too lucrative for him to come out of the closet, so he keeps up a macho appearance by fake-dating beautiful (and occasionally famous) women. His real-life gay partner is a man who frequently accompanies him when he travels, is a bit older than him, and is sometimes introduced as his “cousin” or “business partner”.
