Monday, reports CBC, the Saskatchewan Court of Appeals will announce its ruling on whether the province’s civil marriage commissioners can refuse to perform same sex marriage ceremonies on religious grounds. The province asked the court of appeals for advice on whether proposed legislation allowing commissioners to recuse themselves from performing same sex marriages for religious reasons would in fact be constitutional. As a compromise, the law would compel dissenting commissioners to provide gay or lesbian couples with a referral to a commissioner who would conduct the ceremony.
The New York Daily News is reporting that the murdered, mutilated Portuguese journalist Carlos Castro, also a prominent gay activist, was being increasingly threatened by his young companion, Renato Seabra, his suspected killer. Castro was beaten and crudely castrated, the 65 year old found naked in a pool of blood on the 34th floor of the Intercontinental Hotel Friday evening. Seabra was found hours later at Roosevelt Hospital with cuts and wrist wounds, that some suspect was evidence of a suicide attempt. Investigators believe that Seabra was manipulating Castro, a police source saying “He (Seabra) told people back home, before the trip that he wasn’t gay. He got (Castro) to pay his way to New York and wanted him to boost his career, buy him things.” Seabra was taken to Bellevue Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and remains in custody. Charges are pending.

The Wrap interviews 17 year old Cameron Monaghan, the straight actor earning earlier praise for his portrayal of a gay high school student on Showtime’s Shameless, a drama that premieres Sunday. Monaghan says “There are a lot of gay teens out there watching for gay characters and looking for role models and people they can relate to, so I definitely think there’s a responsibility,” adding “I’m happy to represent the gay community, especially with such a strong, likeable, relatable character like Ian, who really is the anti-stereotype. He goes against the (common perception) of a gay teenage in just about every way, in that he’s tough and strong, not flamboyant, and he’s involved in the military with ROTC training.”
