On Friday, reports CBC, the secretary general of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, Robert Morin, concerned over the creation of a false impression, sent a letter to the Canadian Broadcast Standards Councils asking the panel to reconsider a ruling made by its Atlantic Regional Panel earlier this month that found the unedited 1985 Dire Straits song Money for Nothing unfit for Canadian radio after a listen of CHOZ-FM in St John’s Newfoundland complained about the use of the word “faggot” in one of the song’s verses. The CRTC reported that it has mistakenly received over 250 complaints from the public over the CBSC ruling, “many of the letters it has received mistakenly have assumed that it was the commission, not the CBSC, that determined that the version of the Dire Straits song containing the contested derogatory word was inappropriate for radio airplay.” It added that “The volume of letters and perceived overlap of responsibilities between the commission and the SBSC has created an uncertainty for the public and for radio stations requiring information on the continued appropriateness of playing that version of the song.”
19 year old Ashton Soloman-Cameron was sentenced to 10 months in a youth offender’s institute for an attack on gay couple that captured by security cameras, reports the Oxford Mail. Soloman-Cameron, a chef at Oxford University’s Worcester College, drunkenly attacked Jason and Scott Davenport on October 10th, 2010 after wrongly believing the two had racially insulted him. According to prosecutors, the Davenports were walking up the street, Jason calling to Scott, referring to Ashton as “black man” because he was wearing a black coat. Ashton took it to be racial slur, the Davenports apologized and went to shake his hand. Ashton, however, began attacking the couple, repeatedly punching and stamping on Scott, eventually using one of the victim’s shoes. Jason Davenport suffered a displaced fracture of one ankle, and continues to undergo physiotherapy. Scott suffered multiple bruises and cuts, and two chipped teeth. Soloman-Cameron earlier pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm. In sentencing, Judge Patrick Eccles said “You are bringing misery and shame upon yourself and you have brought hardship to your family and, more importantly, the victims. You have affected the future of the two victims in a serious way. It was a very nasty attack.”
The United Kingdom agency that advises the government on its drug policy, the Advisory Committee on the Misuse of Drugs, is under attack after appointing Dr. Hans-Christian Raabe, who is also the medical co-ordinator for the Council for Health and Wholeness, a Christian organization that hold anti-homosexual opinions, reports the Guardian. The CHW claims that there is health risks associated with “the homosexual lifestyle,” a document stating that “The media and the gay movement portray the homosexual lifestyle as happy, healthy and fulfilled. However, the homosexual lifestyle is associated with a large number of very serious physical and emotional health consequences.” It adds that “A high proportion of homosexual men engage in a destructive lifestyle, for example contracting HIV/AIDS or other STIs, and develop addictions to drug or alcohol. There is a higher burden of depression, (and) attempted or completed suicide among the ‘gay population.’” Perhaps most troubling, Raabe co-authored a paper that argued “While the majority of homosexuals are not involved in pedophilia, it is of grave concern that there is a disproportionately greater number of homosexuals among pedophiles and an overlap between the gay movement and the movement to make pedophilia acceptable.” Raabe, also criticised for his Christian belief-fuelled opinions on drug use (suggesting that religious commitment or involvement with a religious community significantly reduces the risk of alcohol, drug, and nicotine abuse, as well as reducing the risk of depression and suicide), defended his horrific anti-homosexual views by simply stating “This is an appointment regarding drug policy and what views I may or may not have on homosexuality are irrelevant.”
