Participants of a World AIDS protest have been arrested in New York City, NBC reporting that “The protest, called a “schmear” campaign, consisted of 40 members of Housing Works dressed as bagels who took to the streets outside the Brooklyn Public library to protest Bloomberg's refusal to approve a 30 percent rent cap for AIDS patients who are also on welfare. Ten members, including CEO Charles King, were arrested after laying in the middle of the street to block traffic. The Housing Works website says that it is a group, “committed to ending the twin crises of AIDS and homelessness.” The protest was timed to correspond with World AIDS Day.
