Openly Gay And Adopted Daily Mail Columnist Suggests David Furnish And Sir Elton John’s Decision To Have Baby A Repellent Grotesque Act Of Selfishness
The news that David Furnish and Sir Elton John have fathered, via a surrogate, a baby boy, continues to act as touchstone for debate, the latest, Andrew Piece, a columnist for the Daily Mail, who writes that John’s “decision to become a father is another grotesque act of selfishness from Sir Elton, and that the child is a little Christmas bauble he and his partner have awarded themselves. How telling it is that he was born on Christmas Day. As far back as 2001 Sir Elton admitted that he was too old for fatherhood. He told the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet: ‘I have come to the conclusion that it too late for me. Had it been 20 years ago, then I would definitely have done it. I don’t want to be 70 years old when my daughter turns 16.’ Yet he will now be 79, not 70, when his son turns 16.” Pierce, who is gay, and who was, in fact, adopted, make explicit his opposition is not directed towards gay men and women who want to adopt (“I believe same sex couples should be allowed to adopt or have their own children – although I think that in ideal circumstances a child should be brought up by a mother and father,” he writes), but is in fact directed at what he perceives to be an act directly born by John’s aging, pampered, and self-indulgence persona.
