Los Angeles Times Editorial: “Enough Agonizing, Mr. President. Support Marriage Equality”
In the wake of President Obama’s statements last week that his “feelings” about gay marriage “are constantly evolving,” and that he struggles with the issue of marriage equality versus a compromise represented by civil unions, the Los Angeles Times editorial board suggests that the “president could spare himself that struggle if he would analyze the issue logically” and that if he did “he would recognize that it’s irrational, once same-sex couples are given the practical advantages of marriage, to deny them married status. Civil unions, while a vast improvement over the absence of any recognition of same-sex relationships, are almost by definition second-class arrangements.” The editorial posits that Obama’s “reluctance to endorse marriage equality is more political than personal,” and arrives at the following conclusion: “Enough agonizing, Mr. President. Support marriage equality.”
