British Conservative Member of Parliament Nigel Evans, the Deputy Speaker of the Commons, is coming out, the announcement timed to correspond the launch of a Parliamentary group that will support gay MP’s and staff, the Daily Mail reporting that the 53 year old Evans says he is “tired of living a lie” and that in the past he was subject to threats of blackmail, in particular by a former Labour MP whom Evans claims “The MP was saying to anyone who listen, ‘Why is that Nigel Evans leads a life whereby he is gay to some people and not others.” Although he refused to name the politician, Evans said “I could not afford it to be used as leverage against me. I couldn’t take the risk. I don’t want any other MP to face that kind of nastiness again. I am sure there are other gay MPs who would like to be open about their sexuality but are fearful of the consequences. I hope this new group will help them to do so.” That group, ParliOut, a gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender organisation will be formally introduced Monday. What is troubling about the announcement is that Evans has historically served as an obstacle to gay equality, noticeably absent during a vote to legalise civil unions for gays, as well as missing another vote to allow gays to adopt. Evans also supported legislation that prohibited teaching about homosexuality in public schools. He also voted against equalising the age of consent for homosexuals, although two years later he voted for.

NDP MP Bill Siksay announced that he will not seek re-election, the first openly gay elected Canadian member of parliament telling CBC "A federal election could come soon, and so, I wanted my federal riding association to have some opportunity to do a good candidate search and for folks in Burnaby who would think about running as the NDP candidate in the next election to have some time to think about that.” Mr. Siksay sponsored Bill C-389, which would amend the Canadian Human Rights Act and Criminal Code to include the words “gender identity” and “gender expression” to both act’s list of prohibited grounds of discrimination, which recently passed at report stage and is headed to a third reading in early March, after which it needs to be approved by the Senate and gain royal assent prior to becoming law.

The Globe and Mail reports that Craigslist has agreed to remove its erotic services section from Canadian homepages. The move arrives after the Conservative government pressured the San Francisco-based company, Federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson saying “Our government was concerned that such advertisements could facilitate serious criminal offences, such as living on the avails of child prostitution and trafficking in persons.”

Friday, Terrance Calhoun was sentenced to 120 days in jail for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in connection to an attack on Lance Reyna, a transgender Houston Community College student, KTRK-TV reporting that Reyna insists that Calhoun used an anti-gay slur during the incident that took place in June, but that Calhoun repeatedly denied that claim. The 22 year old Calhoun pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in September. He has a prior conviction on a drug possession charge in 2007. The judge will re-visit sentencing after 120 days and can place Calhoun on probation or send him to prison. “I feel reality finally kicked in and he realized there’s a consequence, and as far as genuinely, I couldn’t say he would have taken back what he did,” said Reyna.
