A Christian coalition that created an application to promote an anti-gay document said Thursday that they want Apple to reinstate an edited version of the Manhattan Declaration app, CNN reports. The app, a version of the anti-abortion, anti-gay manifesto, was removed from iTunes and iPhones stores late last month, since, according to Apple, “it violates our developer guidelines by being offensive to large groups of people.” Most of the initial criticism focussed on a quiz that asked questions like “Do you support same sex relationships?” that when answered yes, told the user that they have provided the wrong response. Thursday, Chuck Colson, the former aide to President Nixon, and convicted felon turned evangelical leader, who held draft the declaration released a statement that read in part “In reading some the blogs and press on the Manhattan Declaration app, we understand that one element of the app, the poll, particularly offensive to those who asked for the app’s removal. As a sign of goodwill, we have removed the poll and have resubmitted the app without it.” The coalition says it has collected some 43,000 online signatures in support of the re-adding that app – although that number is likely inflated – and as of Friday, no one from Apple would comment.

San Diego attorney Marc Carlos, who represented the late Michael Portantino, tells the San Diego Reader that the district attorney’s office investigation of Portantino’s Gay & Lesbian Times for allegedly inflated circulation numbers to advertisers was ongoing, and that “There was never any discussion that (Portantino) would not be charged,” adding that “We were discussing potential charges that we could negotiate. I wanted misdemeanour charges.” Hinting that the district attorney’s office was engaging in questionable tactics, Carlos says Portantino “was distraught over the whole thing – people impugning his integrity. That is what pushed him over the edge.” The 52 year old Portantino, who abruptly closed downed the 22 year old gay and lesbian publication in October four months after the now defunct San Diego News Network reported that it was under investigation for falsifying circulation figures, committed suicide Wednesday, jumping off the Park Manor Suites Hotel in Balboa Park.
