18 Year Old Ruby Thomas Found Guilty Of Manslaughter In Anti-Gay Murder Of 62 Year Old Ian Baynham

18 year old Ruby Thomas was found guilty Thursday of manslaughter in the horrific anti-gay attack on 62 year old Ian Baynham, the BBC reports. Baynham was out celebrating a new Home Office position on September 25th, 2009, when Thomas, fuelled by alcohol began screaming homophobic abuse at him and his friend. Baynham confronted the teen; she hit him with her purse, which he grabbed. An accomplice of Thomas’, Joel Alexander, then 19 years old, came from behind, punched Baynham so hard in the side of the head that he hit the sidewalk, fracturing his skull, knocking him unconscious. Thomas and another girl, 18 year old Rachael Burke, who was already found guilty in the case, began to kick Baynham in the head, stomping on his chest. He never regained consciousness and died in hospital 18 days later. Witnesses told the court the attack resembled something out of A Clockwork Orange. The court also heard that Thomas attacked a bus driver in another drunken rage when she was 15 years old. All three will be sentenced in 2011. Ian’s sister, Jenny Baynham, 59 years old, read a victim impact statement, saying her brother’s death had “devastated” their 90 year old mother, adding “I was horrified at what had happened and found it difficult to understand why anyone could have assaulted him in that way. It seems so ironic that his life ended so horrifically and senselessly on the streets of London which he loved so much. He was very aware some people were prejudiced against him."
