The Florida Department of Health intends to drop an estimated 350 uninsured HIV/AIDS patients from a federally funded program that pays for all or most of their drugs because of substantial budget cuts, reports the South Florida Sun Sentinel. Another 2,000 or more HIV-positive patients are at risk of being dropped from the drug subsidy program unless state can make up a $16 million shortfall over the following few months. The cutbacks are particularly profound in South Florida where the rate of new HIV infections per capita is the highest in the United States, the state having the largest waiting list for the government subsidized drug program among the nine states required to have them. Enrolment in the program has reached 11,000.
