Queer Support Centre Opens On Conservative Campus Of University Of Calgary, British Lesbian Pastor Fighting For Marriage Equality Targeted With Anti-Gay Attacks, New Hampshire Gay Marriage Law Perhaps Vulnerable To GOP Led Repeal, Hedi Slimane Male Model Hotness, Trace Lehnhoff Jockstrap iPhone Study, Joe McElderry And His Darling Dimples

The Herald reports that the University of Calgary’s Student Union has initiated a program aimed at promoting sexual and gender diversity on campus, opening Q, the first student space dedicated to serving and supporting the university’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. The space is run by a team of student volunteers, one, Liza Hughes saying that the space is “important at U of C because it’s a particularly conservative campus and it can be especially difficult for queer students here as opposed to some other Canadian universities. Hopefully, it will make a really big difference.”

The Reverend Sharon Ferguson, a pastor with the Metropolitan Community Church, and her partner Franka Strietzel, are among the eight couples – four heterosexual and four homosexual – who are campaigning to overturn a ban in England on same sex marriages and opposite sex civil partnerships, and according to a report in the London Evening Standard, Ferguson has received abusive, anti-gay e-mails, but despite that she is determined to take the fight “as far as possible” adding that the gay marriage ban is “not acceptable in our society.” The eight couples will apply for a licence each week for eight weeks – Ferguson and Strietzel doing so this past Monday, and when they are denied they will file formal complaints with the High Court by year’s end. Ferguson, 52 years old, has been in relationship with the 49 year old Strietzel for over two years, said “We’ve had a lot of people supporting us, but unfortunately I’ve also received some abusive e-mails from people claiming to be Christians who are unhappy with what we are doing.”

The Union Leader reports that New Hampshire’s gay marriage legislation, which came into effect January 1st, 2010, may be in danger of repeal, when a veto-proof Republican majority is sworn in December 1st. Maybe. New Hampshire is in throes of an economic downturn, and the GOP seems intent on focussing on fiscal issues, not social issues, although Kevin Smith, the president of Cornerstone Action, says that an overturning of gay marriage and re-enactment of a parental notification law for minors who are seeking an abortion are now the main priorities, saying “a clear majority of the voters are with us. They never wanted gay marriage in the first place.” The anti-gay National Organization for Marriage has already indicated it is “poised to” work to repeal the same sex marriage law.
