In El Paso, Texas Tuesday, the city council chose not to introduce an ordinance that would maintain health benefits for unmarried partners of city employees, the El Paso Times reporting that by a vote of 4-3 not to anger the electorate who allegedly were upset that the city council considered to reverse a just passed public referendum that removed the city council’s domestic partner policy. Consequently, January 1st, at least 19 gay and unmarried partners of city employees, as well as 200 others, will lose health benefits. The sponsors of the ballot initiative, which includes a number of Christian conservatives, said that the voters were articulating support for “family values” when passing the referendum by 55-percent.
