Brendan Burke Legacy
From the CBC’s Fifth Estate, a documentary on Brendan Burke, the young man who came out publically in November, 2009, and whose life was tragically cut short when he and a passenger, Mark Reedy, were killed driving during a snowstorm February 5th, 2010. The at times terribly poignant documentary is of interest not only for the insights into Brendan –an unarguably hero – but for the questions it raises on why to date no professional athlete playing a team sport has come out, despite, as the film underlines, the well-known fact that today on several NHL teams there are gay athletes who are open to the team, but not to the public.
