Appeals Court Schedules Proposition 8 Hearing And Sets Agenda, Australian Green And Labour Party’s Gay Marriage Political Strategising

An announcement from the United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals asking attorneys on both sides of Proposition 8 at a two-hour hearing scheduled for December 6th, the Los Angeles Times reporting that the court has requested the first hour focus on arguments as to whether anyone holds the legal power to appeal an August district court ruling by Justice Vaughn Walker that the California anti-gay marriage amendment unconstitutional. The second hour will focus of the question of the measure’s constitutionality.

The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that Labour Member of Parliament Mark Arbib has reversed his stance on same sex marriage, now saying he supports the Party’s official posture against gay marriage. Arbib was reportedly rebuked by right-wing colleagues after comments made last week as previously posted that he publicly endorsed an amendment to change laws preventing gay marriage, as well as advocating for a conscience vote on the issue. Tuesday, in Canberra, he said “What I have said is my own personal view. I support party policy.”

Meanwhile, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reports the Labour-led government will support a Green Party motion calling for continued debate on gay marriage.
