University Of Michigan Openly Gay Student Assembly President Chris Armstrong Files Request To Have Anti-Gay Assistant Attorney General Andrew Shirvell Disbarred
University of Michigan Student Assembly President Chris Armstrong filed a request Friday to have Assistant Attorney General Andrew Shirvell disbarred, Ann Arbour.com reports, Armstrong released a statement that read in part “I felt I could not stand by and let Mr. Shirvell continue his reckless, bullying behaviour." Armstrong, the first openly gay student body president at U of M, has been attacked by Shirvell since taking office in the spring, Shirvell alleging that Armstrong was using the position as president to advance a “radical homosexual agenda.” Today, Armstrong asked that an investigation be initiated to disbar Shirvell, who was admitted to the bar in 2007, on “the grounds that he has repeatedly violated the Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct by making obviously false, disgusting and utterly outlandish allegations about Armstrong’s lifestyle and personal behaviour and by trying to get Armstrong ousted from a summer internship on Capitol Hill.”Armstrong cited the Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct, Rule 8.4, which states “it is a professional; misconduct for a lawyer to ... engage in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit, misrepresentation or violation of the criminal law, where such conduct reflects adversely on the lawyer’s honesty, trustworthiness or fitness as a lawyer.” Monday, Armstrong dropped request for a personal protection order against Shirvell. On Tuesday, a request made by the University of Michigan of Public Safety for stalking charges against Shirvell was denied by Washtenaw County prosecutors. Early Friday, Shirvell met with U of M to appeal a trespass order that bars him from any and all university owned property. Next week, Shirvell is scheduled to appear before a state Civil Service Commission to face possible disciplinary actions after taking a personal leave of absence from his position three weeks ago.
