The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Tuesday is demanding that United States Senator Jim DeMint – a political aberration – apologize for referencing his own six year old comments this past Friday that gays and lesbians should be banned from teaching in the public school system, executive director Rea Carey of the gay rights advocacy group saying DeMint was irresponsible in reasserting his archaic position, reports CBS News. In 2004, during a debate with Democrat Inez Tenenbaum, DeMint said he agreed with a South Carolina GOP platform item that stated homosexuals should not teach in public schools, days later DeMint adding that single, pregnant women with live-in boyfriends should also be barred from teaching in the public school system. DeMint’s office Tuesday said the Senator was simply making a point about attacks on politicians who offer a public stance on morality issues by the media. GOProud – the Republican conservative gay rights group also released a statement condemning DeMint’s comments, Christopher Barron saying “Jim DeMint’s comments can only be described as outrageous and bizarre. The idea that someone who says they believe in limited government would support the government weeding out gay teachers and unmarried sexually active female teachers simply defies logic.”
The New Jersey Jewish Standard, which last week published a same sex couple intention to marry announcement, Monday recanted its progressive stance, an editorial reading in part “A group of rabbis has reached out to us and conveyed the deep sensitivities within the traditional/Orthodox community to this issue. Our subsequent discussions with representatives from that community have made us aware that publication of the announcement caused pain and consternation, and we apologize for any pain we may have caused. The Jewish Standard has always strived to draw the community together, rather than drive its many segments apart. We have decided, therefore, since this is such a divisive issue, not to run such announcements in the future.”
