President Obama Tells MTV Town Hall That Being Gay Or Transsexual Is Not A Choice; Unaware Of The Irony Adds That “Discrimination On The Basis Of Sexual Orientation Is Wrong”
Thursday, President Obama told an audience at a MTV town hall that he does not believe being gay or transsexual is a choice, Obama according to CBS News saying “I don’t profess to be an expert. I don’t think it’s a choice. I think people are born with a certain make up, and we’re all children of God,” adding that he contends “we don’t make determinations about how we love. That’s why I think discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is wrong.” Later, as if on cue, an audience member asked why the president has yet to sign an executive order to end the policy known as “don’t ask, don’t tell,” as President Harry Truman did to desegregate the military. President Obama answered that the military ban on openly gay service members offered a different situation, saying “Congress explicitly passed a law that took away power of the executive branch to end this policy unilaterally,” adding that this is “not a situation where with a stroke of the pen I can end this policy.”
