WXYZ reports that the Michigan Civil Rights Commission has condemned assistant attorney general Andrew Shirvell, the author of the blog “The Chris Armstrong Watch,” an attempt to bully and degrade the openly gay University of Michigan Student Assembly President who Shirvell alleges is using his position to advance a “radical homosexual agenda.” The Civil Rights Commission passed a resolution Tuesday that read in part “The Commission believes that such conduct should not be tolerated from anyone, let alone a public official responsible for representing all people equally. The Commission is also concerned about the scope and nature of the involvement of this individual in the execution of the work of the Office of Attorney General.”
KNAW/Fox24 says that openly gay 15 year old Sommer Collins was suspended Tuesday by officials at Ramsey Junior High in Fort Smith, Arkansas for three days allegedly because the ninth grade student wore a homemade tee shirt supporting homosexuality. Sommers said she wore the shirt as a sort of silent protest since Monday, a teacher had asked that she remove a rainbow coloured bracelet. The white tee shirt, according to Sommers, contained no profanity or vulgarity, however she said her mother had been informed by a teacher that the word homosexual depicts sexual acts and that it was disrupting education. No one from Ramsey Junior High or the Fort Smith School District would comment, the Collin’s family has filed a formal complaint.
18 year old David Spencer and 16 year old Chase Morrison have been charged with assault and aggravated harassment after allegedly making anti-gay comments while assaulting a 14 year old boy on a school bus in Hicksville, Long Island, reports the Long Island Press. The alleged assault took place on bus Tuesday afternoon, the victim, a 14 year old boy, suffering bruising after being kicked and stomped on. Wednesday morning the two suspects again beat the boy, slapping him in the face and head while making a number of anti-gay remarks. A third suspect, 16 year old Roy Wilson, is also charged with assault, but did not make any disparaging remarks about the victim’s perceived sexual orientation. Police do not know yet if the driver of the bus witnessed the harassment, but say the abuse has occurred “for some time.” All three are to appear in court late Thursday.
The Associated Press reports that 22 year old Sochaux soccer player Marvin Martin has been forced to apologize after comments he made saying he could never play for the gay soccer organization Paris Foot Gay. The midfielder made the comments last week in an interview with Sochaux’s website, adding that he could not tolerate playing in a pink jersey. The Paris Foot Gay group condemned Sochaux for publishing the player’s comments, and asked that the French club sign its charter against homophobia in soccer. Thursday, Martin, offered an awkward apology, said that he “never intended to hurt or insult a certain community with my words. Tolerance and respect matter a lot in high-level sport.”
