The Associated Australian Press reports that a court in the Victorian state has upheld a discrimination complaint filed by a gay youth suicide prevention group against a Christian Brethren-run business that refused to accept a camp booking because the church contended that the group promotes homosexual activity which contradicts the church’s Biblical beliefs. WayOut, a suicide support organization founded in 2002 that works with gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered youth in the area, attempted to book the Christian Youth Camps’ Philip Island Adventure Resort in June, 2007, planning to lead a weekend of workshops combating homophobia. Judge Felicity Hampel ruled Friday that while businesses and its employees are entitled to their personal and religious beliefs, they are not entitled to impose those same beliefs on others in a way that denied their freedom from discrimination. Christian Youth Camps were ordered to pay $5,000 in compensation. WayOut program coordinator Sue Hackney said that the ruling delivered by Judge Hampel would “go a long way” to showing young people that homophobia was not acceptable to the community at large, adding “It was always a bitter irony that the first step in our attempt to show young people that they can fight homophobia in their home towns was met with homophobia itself.”
