September 26th, Mary Kate Morris accompanied by her girlfriend “Nic” Marchetto attended her first Baltimore Ravens home game at M&T Bank Stadium, the Ravens hosting the Cleveland Browns, and, according to a report by The Washington Blade, at halftime Morris and her girlfriend waited in line at a concession stand. The two displayed public affection for her girlfriend, Morris saying “Every once in a while I’d just hug into her and just stand there waiting for the lines to die down. And we kissed probably a handful of times, but there was a straight couple next to us just going to town,” and allegedly a security guard asked the two to "stop making a scene." Then, according to Morris went to purchase French fries and walked away with a cup for ketchup, offering to pay for the cup, but the same security guard asked them to leave, accusing them of stealing the cup. “He was like we have a problem. You stole the cup that you’re eating your fries out of. Well Nic was like, ‘Are you kidding? How much do you want for it? I didn’t know cups were this sacred here,’” Morris said. The couple were removed from the game, Kevin Byrne, the senior vice-president of Public and Community Relations released a statement that read in part “We’re aware of the incident, and we’re satisfied with the action taken by the concessionaire, security and police.” The couple has been in contact with the American Civil Liberties Union and is considering filing a lawsuit.
The Guardian profiles Gareth Thomas, the 36 year old professional rugby’s only openly gay player, having come out publically last December, Thomas turning what could have a been a personal tragedy marked by feared, shame, and thoughts of suicide because of secret sexuality into a remarkable story of triumph. “I know I’m still at the early stages of coming out, so this big happy drug I’m on will probably wear off at some stage, but right now when I’m happy I want people to know I’m happy, and the reason I’m happy,” says Thomas. “I didn’t go through what I went through – and put everyone else through it, too – to be unhappy.”
