The Associated Press on Indonesia information minister and member of the National AIDS commission Tifatful Sembiring, who weighed in on the debate over an international gay film festival held in Jakarta that was condemned by Islamic extremists, Sembiring taking to Twitter to tweet “Behaviours which are potentially carrying the virus must be prevented.” Referencing the Quran, he added “God turned the earth upside down” and rained them (homosexuals) with stones from the burnt land.” He then told a joke” “AIDS – Akibat Itunya Dipakai Sembarangan:” translation – “because they were reckless about where they put their genitals.” Sembiring soon after offered an awkward apology, saying he did not mean to offend anyone, but in refrain that underscores that which is so wrong with social media, said “But everyone has the right to voice their opinion.” The 49 year old Sembiring is a member of the Prosperous Justice Party, and early on embraced Twitter to share his opinions, including one which draws a correlation between immoral behaviour and natural disasters.
Daniel Radcliffe, whose tireless work on behalf of the Trevor Project (the 24-hour, 365 day-a-year crisis prevention line that serves to support gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender youth) is well-documented, tells MTV News “Learning about the suicides deaths of Tyler Clementi, Seth Walsh, Asher Brown, Billy Lucas and Justin Aaberg has been heartbreaking for me. These young people were bullied and tormented by people that should have been their friends. We have a responsibility to be better to each other, and accept each others’ differences regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ability, or religion and stand up for someone when they’re bullied.”
The New York Post on an odd incident that occurred June 18th, 40 year old skydiving instructor Donald Zarda, strapped tightly to a student – identified only as Rosanna – as the duo floated from an airplane in a tandem jump, joked that he could not be falling for her (an awful pun) because, as he told her “Don’t worry, I’m gay.” Post-jump, Rosanna complained to officials at Skydive Long Island, accusing Zarda of “inappropriate behaviour” and touching her “in a way that made her feel uncomfortable.” He was then fired. Zarda, on record as being “100-percent gay” has filed a discrimination suit, saying “So, you’re accusing me – the gay guy – of touching the girl inappropriately? The situation is so bizarre.”
