The Indianapolis Star on the authors of a human rights ordinance that the Indianapolis City-County Council passed in 2005, guaranteeing equality regardless of sexual orientation, arguing that the recent refusal of Just Cookies to fill a request to create rainbow-coloured cupcakes to celebrate National Coming Out Day is not tantamount to discrimination. Jackie Nytes, a Democrat and sponsor of the ordinance, writing a letter sent to the Star “We never intended for good businesses to be kicked out. We sure never meant for the ordinance to be interpreted that aggressively,” adding that the measure was meant to ensure that all people have equal protections when it comes to housing, employment, and public accommodation, adding that the original ordinance allows business the right to reject requests to support cause in which they do not believe. Just Cookies owner David Stockton told an administrator from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis that he did not want to bake cupcakes for the coming out event held October 7th because his was a family-run business and he did not endorse homosexuality. The city, according to a spokesperson for Mayor Greg Ballard, said they are still investigating if that denial constitutes discrimination.
