Did The New York Times Out Zachary Quinto Or Did It Change The Way Mainstream Media Address Speculated Sexual Orientation
There is a general consensus that a profile appearing in the Sunday New York Times of Zackary Quinto represents a sea change in the way mainstream media treats the supposed sexual orientation of stars which is by addressing it directly. Quinto, who is appearing in the first New York City revival of the great Tony Kushner play Angels in America, playing Louis, is quoted saying “I’m grateful that celebrity or notoriety wasn’t thrust up me when I was in my 20s, because I think I would have buckled under the weight of it, as so many people do. But I’ve come to realize through experience that ultimately I really do have a lot of power in terms of the way I relate to the public or to people outside of my intimate circle of friends and family. Boundaries are very important to me.” The Times then writes that “Despite Mr. Quinto’s efforts to keep his private life private, the blogosphere is rife with speculation about his sexuality, no doubt fuelled by his support for gay rights and organizations like the Trevor Project. He prefers not to feed that rumour mill with either substantiation or dismissal. He speaks passionately about gay marriage, about “don’t ask, don’t tell” and about the recent wave of gay bullying and suicides.” Quinto then adds “The fact that these things are such hot-button issues right now, socially and politically, I would rather talk about that then about who I sleep with. I would love to be a voice in this maelstrom of chaos and obsessive celebrity infatuation that says, ‘Let’s talk about something that matters.’”

But... they don't really out him at all do they? They say that there is speculation and that he supports LGBT causes. They don't say he's gay. How is this different than hundreds of stories that have run about Anderson Cooper, for instance?
