Canadian cutie Alexandre Despatie won the one metre springboard completion Sunday at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, the Globe and Mail reports, Despatie earning the medal three times in a row, becoming the first Canadian to collect seven career gold medals in the Games. Australian Matthew Mitcham, who earned the ten metre gold medal at the Beijing Olympic Games, earned silver Sunday, his fellow Australian Scott Robertson earned the bronze. Despatie won his first gold Commonwealth medal at the age of 13, and said Sunday “It feels like a long time ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday. Hopefully I have a bit more to give. At 25 years of age it’s weird being called a veteran.” The Sydney Morning Herald reporst that the openly gay Mitcham, favoured to win the ten metre competition, compared Despatie to diving great (and openly gay) American Greg Louganis, saying of Alexandre “I’m completely in awe of him. I was a lot more confident with the event before I released he would be competing in it. I tried to keep up with him; it encouraged me to train harder, because I knew he would be incredibly difficult to beat.”
