Anti-Gay Michigan Assistant Attorney General Andrew Shirvell Files Motion Asking That Judge Ruling On Request By Chris Armstrong To Issue Personal Protection Order Withdraw From Case
Andrew Shirvell, the Michigan assistant attorney general currently on voluntary leave for his actions harassing and tormenting openly gay University of Michigan Student Assembly President Chris Armstrong. Armstrong filed a request for a personal protection order against Shirvell, a University of Michigan alumnus, whose personal blog has routinely attacked Armstrong for attempting to advance a “radical homosexual agenda” from his position as president, including pushing for gender-neutral housing – apparently as radical as can be imagined. If a personal protection were to be issued it would likely constitute the end of Shirvell’s anti-gay hate antics, so, according to AnnArbour.com, in a pre-emptive strike, Shirvell is asking that “Judge Nancy Francis recuse herself from hearing the request by University of Michigan student body president Chris Armstrong for a restraining order against Shirvell,” the assistant attorney general arguing that the Francis is unable to impartially hear the case because Wheeler Smith, Francis’ sister, has been publically critical of Shirvell. In a court filing October 6th, Shirvell says Wheeler Smith and her public comments made regarding Shirvell, make it impossible for Judge Francis to remain impartial, Shirvell citing an October 1st interview on CNN between Smith and Anderson Cooper, when Cooper asks about her interactions with Shirvell. “Well, the encounters have been hostile,” Francis said. “They have been rather intimidating. If I were a regular individual, I think I would have been very nervous about them. But I’m a politician, and I’m used to running across people who disagree with me. So, I certainly reached that point with Andrew Shirvell. I think he is beyond the pale, if you will. He should be dismissed from the attorney general’s office. He’s using the power of that office, he’s using the representation of the office in his encounters in order to intimidate and win favour and points for his cause.” In 2004, Shirvell pushed for a boycott of the University Ban when Wheeler joined the board of directors, Wheeler at the time saying Shirvell was attacking her and her son, Conan Smith, because they were Catholic and pro-choice. Wheeler told the AnnArbour.com this week that Shirvell’s attacks have revealed a “vehemence” and a “level of hostility” that is frightening. Neither Shirvell, Chris Armstrong, nor the University of Michigan would comment on the request to recuse Judge Francis, who is to rule on the motion October 25th, at 1:30 pm.
