DNA Info.com reports that a bartender at the city’s oldest gay bar, Julius Bar, was attacked in what authorities describe as another anti-gay assaults in New York City. 45 year old Frederick Giunta was arrested Friday and charged with attempted robbery and assault as a hate crime for first attacking a male victim in the early evening of October 11th at Ty’s Bar at 114 Christopher Street, trying to take the 31 year old year man’s wallet and punching him in the face. Minutes later, he entered the Julius Bar along West 10th Street, and attacked the bartender after he was refused service because the bartender thought he was already intoxicated, allegedly yelling “What are you going to do, you fucking faggot. You are a fucking faggot.” According to another bartender, Alex Michaels, Giunta had been banned from the Julius Bar ten years earlier. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Hate Crimes Unit is investigating the incident. Giunta is currently in custody, held on $25,000 bail at Rikers Island Jail, due to appear in court again October 21st. Authorities say Giunta has a history of theft.
