A Melbourne school – the Le Page Primary School – has decided to drop the word gay from an Australian classic children’s song – Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree. Principal Garry Martin said that instead of “Gay you life must be” the children will sing “Fun your life will be.” Martin says that “All I was doing, relatively innocently, was substituting one word because I knew if we sing ‘Gay your life must be’ the kids will roll around the floor in fits of laughter.” He added that the children use the word gay pejoratively, although they have little understand of the word’s actual definition. “For example,” said Martin, “if a boy is not particularly good at sport and they will refer to that child as gay. They have a vague idea how it can be used but they don’t really know they full extent of it.” However, Martin later said that he should have taken the opportunity to discuss the true meaning of the word with the children. “In hindsight that is what I probably should have done, I just didn’t realise the implications.”

A bill before New South Wales parliament Lower House that would allow gay and lesbian couples to adopt has passed in parliament’s Lower House. The vote was 46 in favour and 44 against. There are proposed amendments that would alter anti-discrimination provisions so that faith-based adoption agencies can refuse gay couples and that the preferences of the birth parents can be met. A further vote on the amendment is required before the bill can go to the Upper House for ratification.

Meanwhile, an anti-gay New South Wales Conservative Member of Parliament who opposes the gay adoption bill is denying he accessed porn websites from his office, Fred Nile stating that members of his staff were simply researching links on certain sites as a part of an investigation. An audit found that over 200,000 hits to pornographic sites under Nile’s login name.
