USA Hockey announced in late August that Cole Burkhalter, of Knoxville, Tennessee is the inaugural recipient of the Brendan Burke Internship and that Cole will begin working in the hockey operations department at USA Hockey’s national office in Colorado Springs, Colorado this month. The Brendan Burke Internship was created earlier this year and is to be awarded annual to a recent college graduate who is pursuing a career in hockey operations, in memory of Brendan, who came out publically in November, 2009, and who lost his life in an automobile accident February 5th, 2010. Burke, the son of Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian, served as a student assistant for the Miami University (at Ohio) men’s ice hockey team. Cole played hockey until the age of 17 when he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. He then took up coaching – he has attained a Level 4 USA Hockey certification and is awaiting approval on Level 5 - and is currently completing a master degree in sports administration at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York.

Irony alert: In Pittsburgh, over 400 hundred Norwin High School seniors gathered to view a power point presentation on the importance of donating blood. Instead, they got picture after picture of gay porn. The police are investigating to determine if charges will be filed. According to Detective Sergeant Bouldin, “There were some images projected that were – we’ll just leave it go as ‘undesirable,’ adding that “We’re still trying to determine how that occurred.” The computer from whence the pornographic images arose came from a Central Blood Bank employee who has been subsequently suspended indefinitely pending the outcome of an internal investigation. The non-profit CBB offered an apology, a statement that read in part “This employee’s actions violated our policy to conduct all operations in an ethical manner. We do not condone these actions and will not tolerate this type of behaviour from our employees.” School officials also apologized, sending a letter home with students that stated the school would now take “every measure we can to ensure that the investigation is carried out with the utmost fidelity.” A second presentation was cancelled. Gay men, as a reminder, in America, as in other countries around the world, are banned from donating blood.

Ryan Buell, a star of A&E’s series Paranormal State, has come out as bisexual in his new book Paranormal State: My Journey Into the Unknown. According to Entertainment Weekly, Buell identifies as Roman Catholic, and writes that “I’ve decided to share my sexuality and struggle over faith in hopes that others will no longer feel as though they are alone or that they can’t be religious.”

John Waters, appearing at the North Louisiana Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, suggested an idea for American gays and lesbians to mount a drive for marriage equality. “I think we should just try to make heterosexual divorce illegal,” he said.

Ryan Reynolds graces the cover of the October GQ magazine, inside he talks about his body – a lot.

The very sexy Xavier Samuel owns pairs and pairs of Calvin Klein underwear, one most recently on display Monday in New York City.
