Christine O’Donnell, Her Openly Gay Sister And Her Ex-Ex-Gay Former Aide
Meet Wade Richards, a 30 year gay man who ten years ago aided abstinence advocate, gay baiting, Tea Party endorsed and current GOP candidate for the Senate from the great state of Delaware Christine O’Donnell make her name as a conservative Christian who preached the evils of homosexuality. Richards, who had just completed a stay in an ex-gay rehabilitation program in 1996 when became SALT (The Saviour’s Alliance for Lifting the Truth) outreach coordinator and spokesperson on homosexuality. He assumed that role despite telling O’Donnell that same year “You know, Christine, I’m still super struggling with same-sex attraction. I don’t really know if this is real, if I can really be this changed person that I’m going around the country speaking and saying that I am.” Richards said he and his concerns were ignored – O’Donnell spent the rest of that decade demonizing gays, objecting to people living with AIDS being deemed victims because the disease is a product of their own actions and linking homosexuality to pedophilia – despite O’Donnell having an openly gay sister. The Daily Beast reports that thankfully, Richards is now an ex-ex-gay, living in Arizona, helped by Wayne Besen, founder of Truth Wins Out, the organization that battled anti-gay religious extremists, Richards coming out in 2000. After that, Richards says Christine O’Donnell – Christian extraordinaire – “totally turned her back on me. I never heard from her ever again. That’s been my experience with the Christian community in general. The minute I was struggling and saying, ‘Hey, listen I don’t know really where I am with this,’ that’s when everyone really turned their back on me.”
