In Oakland, California, thousands celebrated Gay Pride, the city host to the festivities after a six year absence. In addition to food, music, and cultural events, including a performance by Chaka Khan, there was a Get Screened Oakland lounge, set up by the office of the mayor, encouraging citizens to learn about the illness, its “new epidemic,” as well as treatment options.
Organizers of the 2010 Belgrade Gay Pride Parade announce October 10th as this year’s date, and they are calling on the state to successfully protect the LGBT community from violence and discrimination, adding that the parade is not the final goal, but a small part of the solution in focussing the attention of society to the problems the gay community faces on a daily basis. The organizers said “We see the Pride Parade 2010 as an all inclusive event, as a peaceful and nonviolent public gathering and a place where we will show together that lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender individuals in Serbia can walk through the streets of Belgrade freely and without fear with the support of all those who support equality, tolerance and the respect of human rights.” Last year, the attempt to host the parade was unsuccessful after the police said it could guarantee the safety of the participants.
In Budapest Saturday, an estimated one hundred committed heterosexuals attended a “heterosexual pride” parade, one of the organizers saying that the aim of the march was to prevent homosexuals from using public spaces for gatherings, presenting a petition asking that Hungary’s law of assembly be revised to prevent gays from gathering. Two MPS – Dora Duro and Elod Novak – of the extremist nationalist Jobbik party accepted the petition and promised their support.
Action against Australian Olympian Stephanie Rice and her anti-gay comments has been taken by at least one of her corporate sponsors, Jaguar announcing Rice has been let out of her endorsement contract. Jaguar Australia general manager Kevin Goult saying “We wish Stephanie success for the future,” the luxury car company popular with the gay community. Davenport, an underwear company, said that it did not “in any way” condone Rice’s comments, tweeting that the South African rugby team were “faggots,” but would not comment further whether it too intended to drop Rice as a corporate spokesperson. Rice said that she accepted Jaguar’s decision. “I have made a mistake and I am very sorry for my actions,” she said. Matthew Mitcham, the openly gay Olympian and fellow Australian who trained with Rice, said he doubted the anti-gay taunt was deliberate, Mitcham saying “I don’t condone what she said, but I don’t think she is a homophobic person at all. I don’t think she meant anything by it.”
