Thousands Attend March In Israel Memorializing One Year Anniversary Of Tel Aviv Gay Youth Club Shooting, Study Reveals That 76 Continue To Prosecute Homosexuality As Crime And Only 56 Countries Have Any Anti-Discrimination Statutes, Alliance Defense Fund Intends To Appeal Decision Upholding Eastern Michigan University Expulsion Of Anti-Gay Graduate Student, Joe McElderry Posts Message Thanking Fans, Brandon Flowers Gets Nylon, Rick Malambri Shirtless In 3D, Romulo Arantes, Ryan Gosling Makes Guys With iPhones Appearance

An estimated 3,000 people participated in a memorial march that marked the one year anniversary of a shooting a gay youth club in Tel Aviv that took the lives to two, and injured several. The lone gunman remains at large. Israeli Education Minister Gideon Sa’ar attended the memorial ceremony, and spoke, saying that sexual identity would be introduced into school curriculum, and that his ministry is “working to ensure that violence based on homophobia will be recognized as violence based on the hatred, of the other. Education material has been and is being prepared for teaching sexual identity and gender in schools and high schools” His appearance, however, angered many, who wanted to know why he and any other government official opted not to participate in Thursday’s Gay Pride parade in Jerusalem. Organizers of the memorial called for donations to aid those left disabled from injuries suffered in the attack last year, MK Horowitz saying that “the fact that those injured in the attack are not recognized in Israel of 2010 as hate crime victims, and are not supported by the State, is proof of the inadequacy of Israeli society.”

The Independent on Sunday reports on a new study commissioned by the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association that reveals there are 76 countries which continue to prosecute people of the grounds of their perceived sexual orientation, 7 of those countries able to punish same sex acts with death. Only 53 countries worldwide have implemented anti-discrimination measures, while only 26 countries acknowledge gay marriage.

Attorneys for Julea Ward, the Eastern Michigan University graduate student expelled from its counselling program because contrary to curriculum guidelines and professional counselling association protocol, she adamantly refused to affirm a gay client’s relationship during a practicum, say that they will appeal a decision be a federal court last Monday that upheld EMU’s ruling. Judge George Steeh, in rendering his ruling, said that the issue was whether EMU has the right to enforce requirements of equity fundamental to the field of counselling and not whether Ward’s First and Fourteenth Amendment rights were violated. Tuesday, EMU underlined their commitment to the Code of Ethics of the American Counselling Association and the Ethical Standards of the American School Counsellor Association; a commitment the university argues alone motivated their decision to drop Ward from the program. The Alliance Defense Fund, a quasi-religious organization defending Ward, says it will take the case all the way to the Supreme Court is necessary.

Joe McElderry - seen below with fellow X-Factor contestant Lloyd Daniels last fall - came out in an exhaustive interview with The Sun, the X-Factor champion as candid as he is cute. In advance of the announcement, Joe posted on his website that he has “always been a very honest person and so it is important for me to continue to be honest. It has been the most amazing year so far and I feel so privileged. It’s also been a time of real self realisation and I fell as if I have grown up so much in these few months. There has been speculation about my sexuality in the past and I have always been honest at the time I have been asked. Over the past few weeks I have really had time to reflect and to realise who I am. I spoke to my friends and family about this in the last few days and it was important to do the same for you all as you have been so supportive. I have had nothing but support from you and many of you have been very open in saying that you will continue to support me whatever my sexuality. It is important to me to let you know first, so that you know the stories in the papers are true. I made the choice to speak openly about this.” For a 19 year old, McElderry is a remarkably articulate, assured young man that would be right as anyone’s role model.
