Kelz Sutherland, a 19 year old from Edinburgh, admitted in court Tuesday to nine charges of extortion over the period of January 1st, 2008 through to December 31st, 2009, the charges stemming from a sex phone line the teen fabricated which tricked men into talking about under-age sex followed by a threat to reveal them to the authorities unless they paid. There are ten victims in total to date, Sutherland is said to have stolen the equivalent of $140,000, none of which has been recovered. Sentencing was deferred and Sutherland remains in police custody.

United States Judge Fernando Gaitan ruled Tuesday that a Missouri law limiting demonstrations at military funerals violates the free speech clause contained in the First Amendment, consequently clearing the way for Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church to continue protesting at the services of military personal. In 2005, the WCB protested the private funeral of Army Specialist Edward Lee Myers in St. Joseph, Missouri, the 21 year old killed while on patrol in Iraq. The state legislature subsequently passed the Specialist Edward Lee Myers Law that criminalized picketing “in front or about” a funeral location or procession. The WCB then brought suit and Tuesday, in 19 page ruling, Gaitan wrote that the law “could have the effect of criminalizing speech the mourners want to hear, including speech from counter-protesters to plaintiffs’ (the Westboro Church’s) message. As the law burdens substantially more speech than is necessary to further the government’s interest, (the law) violates the free speech clause of the First Amendment.” This October, the United States Supreme Court will hear a similar challenge against the WCB brought by the father of Marine Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder, whose 2005 funeral in Missouri was also picketed.

Ceara Sturgis, the openly gay senior at Wesson Attendance Center in Mississippi who was denied the right to wear a traditional tuxedo rather than a customary girl’s drape for her yearbook photo is suing. The American Civil Liberties Union, acting on behalf of Ceara, who graduated with honours, and whose photograph or any other passing reference was ultimately removed from the yearbook, filed the suit against the Copiah County School District, arguing that they violated Sturgis’ constitutional right to equal treatment. “It’s unfair and unlawful to force students to conform to outdated notions about what boys and girls actually look like without any regard to who they actually are as people,” said ACLU attorney Christine Sun.

Steven Slater reportedly partied with 350 gay men aboard a birthday cruise for Playgirl VIP of marketing Daniel Nardicio Sunday, Slater downing bottles of Budweiser while shouting “Fly United!”
