Mexico’s Roman Catholic Cardinal Noberto Rivera said Sunday that the decision made Thursday by the Mexican Supreme Court upholding a law legalizing gay marriage in the capital city was “aberrant” and immoral” and that “the church cannot fail to call evil evil.” Rivera added that although homosexuals have suffered inordinate abuses from society at large, allowing same sex marriage was not a means to atone for injustices, calling same sex unions “inherently immoral” and saying that they in fact “distort the nature of marriage raised by Christ to the dignity of a sacrament.”

Saturday, despite obvious signs theirs is a losing battle, the National Organization for Marriage summer One Man, One Woman tour stopped in Atlanta, Georgia, around a dozen or so supporters gathering in front of the state capital building where they heard NOM head Brian Brown say “Marriage makes us more human. Marriage is the fundamental building block of society, and anyone that attempts to redefine it is redefining something that’s much greater that any one of us here today,” adding that the anti-gay marriage movement in the United States should not be swayed by a decision Wednesday striking down California’s gay marriage ban – Proposition 8 – made by what Brown deemed an “activist judge.” As a part of the NOM stop, gospel singer Vernessa Mitchell sang the song Unity, which drew a loud response not from NOM supporters, but from a counter-rally across the street; a pro-gay marriage celebration that outnumbered NOM supporters 10-1. Andrew Wood, one of the organizers of the counter-rally, said “I’m dismayed that an organization like NOM could come out and pull out this much press. But I think that the numbers show what reality is, and reality is on the side of justice and law for everyone.”

John Yallop, an ex-vicar, and his wife Colette have been banned from ever becoming foster parents after the couple told the Lancashire County Council in England that if approved as foster parents they would be prepared to help same sex couples adopt children and permit one gay persons to visit on their own, but would not allow couples in their family home to avoid any and all awkward questions from the couple’s own young son and daughter. The 62 year old John Yallop said that “We are not homophobic and have worked alongside gay people, but we believe inviting gay couples into our home for the handover process might be detrimental to our family life and our young children. We don’t want to have to explain to our five-year daughter or seven-year old son why a youngster we’ve been caring for has two mummies or daddies.” The council’s Fostering Recruitment and Assessment Team wrote the couple in July informing them that their assessment as foster parents was to end citing the couple’s views about their “inability to work with particular groups of people) in particular gay and lesbian people.” Mr. Yallop, who was forced to resign from the Church of England after admitting he committed adultery with his current wife, are appealing the ruling, saying they are being discriminated against because of their Christian beliefs.

Battle Creek, Michigan police are investigating the stabbing of a 45 year male as a hate crime. The victim, released from hospital Wednesday, was stabbed repeatedly in the head and neck July 25th. He told police that the suspect forced him at knifepoint to drive to wooded area, and there a witness said that he heard screaming and “when he investigated, say one man attacking another. When the witness told the attacker to stop, the replied it was a domestic dispute and to leave. The suspect then fled, taking the victim’s car.” According to investigators, the day after the attack, an anonymous message – since removed – appeared on Craigslist under the headline “I warned you, you dumb queer.” The message then spoke of the meeting between the two, adding “I e-mailed and said I have something ... but you did not think it was a knife did you. Now you are in the hospital and your car is in the river. I warned you.”

Openly gay Mark Tewksbury, an Olympian champion and just named as Canada’s Olympic chef de mission for the 2012 London Games, says that “I came of age in Grade 8, when I was 14, and I had a major attraction to some of my friends. This was problematic – they were attracted to girls, I was attracted to them. I made a pass at one of my friends; it ended badly. At that point, something in me went, ‘Ok, we’re not going there again.’ I kept that part of myself bottled up and put it aside. I was still human – surrounded by attractive people in their bathing suits – but there’s something about swimming six hours a day that bonds you on a basic human level of respect. That’s the perspective I had for most of my swimming career.”

A new study from the United Kingdom suggests that nearly one quarter of all people playing, coaching, or refereeing professional soccer personally know a gay player. The study also reveals that 8 out of 10 fans thought that openly gay players would have the same positive effect on soccer as black players did in the nineteen-eighties and nineties when professional soccer successfully attempt to tackle racism. The study by the University of Staffordshire, sadly, also found one third of those who know a current player to be gay believe that if they were to come out, they would face immense abuse from other players and from fans.
