Bruce LaBruce’s L.A. Zombie Screens In Switzerland, Mark Tewksbury Named Canadian Olympic Chef De Mission, Killers Of Jose Sucuzhanay Sentenced, Another New Jersey Library Removes Revolutionary Voices, On HIV, Nick Jonas, Shia LaBeouf And A Banana, 2x(is) Sexiness

Canadian director Bruce LaBruce’s L.A. Zombie premiered at the Locarno Film Festival in the Swiss Alps Thursday evening, three weeks after an Australian screening was abruptly halted when the country’s censored the film, banning it from presentation. The film stars gay porn icon Francois Sagat as a homeless schizophrenic who believes he is an alien zombie, and who wanders the streets of Los Angeles attempting to bring the dead back to life by having sex. The film will receive its North American premiere in September at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Openly gay two-time Canadian Olympic swimmer Mark Tewksbury was named the country’s chef de mission for the London 2012 Olympic Games, Tewksbury the official representative and spokesperson for the Canadian Olympic Team. The 42 year old is a board member of the Gay and Lesbian Athletics Foundation, and he is actively committed to ensuring gays are allowed to compete without discrimination.

Keith Phoenix and Hakim Scott, convicted in the bias motivated murder of an Ecuadorean immigrant in Bushwick, Brooklyn in December, 2008, with a baseball bat, were sentenced Thursday, 30 year old Phoenix, charged and convicted of murder and assault with hate crime sentenced to 37 years to life in prison, Scott, who was convicted of manslaughter and assault, but not of hate crime charges, received a sentence of 37 years as well. Phoenix, arrested almost three months after the murder, was tried twice; the first ending in a mistrial with the jury deadlocked. 31 year old Jose Sucuzhanay was walking arm in arm with his brother, Romel, when Phoenix, Scott, and a third man stopped the SUV they were driving, and believing the men to be gay, attacked them both. Romel, who was injured, but not seriously, has since returned to Ecuador “because of what happened to my brother.” When he was arrested, Phoenix, confessing to the murder during interrogation, said “So I killed someone – that makes me a bad guy?”

Another Burlington County, New Jersey public library has removed all copies of Revolutionary Voices: A Multicultural Queer Youth Anthology, action motivated by the county’s library director Gail Sweet, who contends that the work is “child pornography.”
