Professor Ken Powell, an adjunct professor who taught course on Catholicism at the University of Illinois, has been fired after a student complained that the teacher engaged in hate speech by suggesting that he concurred with the church’s teaching that homosexual sex is immoral. Powell, who was teaching a course titled Introduction to Catholicism and Modern Catholic Thought this past spring, sent an e-mail to students preparing for an exam in which he purported to explain some Catholic beliefs. He wrote that “Natural Moral Law says that Morality must be a response to REALITY. In other words, sexual acts are only appropriate for people who are complementary, not the same.” An unidentified student sent the e-mail to the head of the religious department, deeming the content “hate speech,” adding that “teaching a student about the tenets of a religion is one thing. Declaring that homosexual acts violate the natural laws of man is another.” In his defence, Dr. Howell, who stated that he makes explicit he is a Catholic, said that his paramount responsibility as an instructor leading a class on Catholicism “is to teach what the Catholic Church teaches,” adding that he has “always made it very, very clear to my students they are never required to believe what I’m teaching and they’ll never be judged on that,” the point underlining the parameters of what constitutes free speech in an academic setting.
In Iowa, State Senator Kim Reynolds, recently chosen by Republican Terry Branstad as his running mate in the gubernatorial race, said Tuesday that she believes “that the definition of marriage is between one man and one woman from a religious aspect. That is my belief. I have stated that. I have always believed that.” Reynolds added that she would consider options other than marriage, saying “we could take a look at civil unions.” Iowa is one of five states that offers legal gay marriage, however the Branstad campaign has stated that if elected they will argue for a vote on a constitutional amendment to ban same sex marriage.
