United Nations Votes To Accredit Gay And Lesbian Human Commission, Nate Phelps To Head Anti-Homophobic Center, Arthur Sales Sizzles, Nicholas Hoult Hotness, Top Thirteen LGBT Youth Literary Titles, The Straight Gay Softball Player, Cory Montieth

Heartening news Monday, the United Nations Economic and Social Council voted to accredit the International Gay and Lesbian Human Commission after intense lobbying by the Obama administration. The IGLHRC becomes only the tenth gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender human rights advocacy group to grain consultative status at the U.N., Carey Alan John, executive director saying that “today’s decision is an affirmation that the voices of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people have a place at the United Nations as part of a vital civil society. The clear message here is that these voices should not be silence and that human rights cannot be denied on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.” The IGLHRC began applying for status in 2007, denied throughout till today by various homophobic obstacles. 23 countries, including Canada, voted in favour of the resolution, while China and Pakistan were among the 13 counties who voted against.

Nate Phelps, the estranged son of American anti-gay zealot Fred Phelps, has been named the new executive director of the Calgary chapter of the Center for Inquiry, an atheist, agnostic organization that promotes the separation of church and state, and advocates against homophobia, an idea that resonates particularly in Alberta, where Bill 44 was recently passed.
