Thursday, Presbyterian hierarchy voted to permit non-celibate gays in committed relationships to serve as clergy, 53-percent of delegates to the church’s general assembly approving the proposal. Under current church policy, Presbyterians are allowed to become clergy, deacons, or elders if they are married or are celibate – the church defining marriage as that existing between “a man and woman.” The new policy would remove the gender specific definition, replacing it with “two people.”The move towards a liberal, inclusivity is not without opposition; a conservative faction contending that the changes are being made in order to appease secular law, and that they contradict the core teaching of God.

An update: late Thursday the same Presbyterian hierarchy decided not to redefine marriage the in church constitution to include “two people” instead of “a man and a woman.” The vote passed by a small margin – 51-percent – however church leaders could agree to readdress the issue Friday. If that does not happen, the issue cannot be revisited for another two years.

Researchers have discovered antibodies that are able to protect against a wide range of AIDS viruses and they believe that they are able to use them to design a vaccine against the incurable virus. Gary Nabel, of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who led the study, said “I am more optimistic about an AIDS vaccine at this point in time that I have been probably in the last 10 years.”

After a meeting Thursday with GLAAD, NBC announced it was revising the rules for its annual Modern Wedding contest to allow same sex couples to apply for a ceremony to be conducted on The Today Show. The network extended the deadlines for application until Monday. Jarrett Barrios, the president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation said “we thrilled that ‘Today show’s “Modern Wedding Contest’ now recognizes what most fair-mined Americans have already concluded – a wedding celebrates love and commitment, whether the spouses are straight or gay.”
