Jurors in Maine awarded Edward Russell of Buxton more than $1 million in a discrimination suit against Express Jet Airlines based on sexual orientation. The jury, who heard three days of testimony, taking six hours to rule that the airline violated the state’s Human Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation. The award, the largest sexual discrimination in Maine history, is likely to be reduced by a judge, capped just above $500,000. Russell and his attorney Guy Loranger successfully argued that as a gay man he was repeatedly denied promotions for which he was well qualified for simply because the airline did not want to place a gay man in the position of a supervisor.
