The League Against Cruel Sports, a United Kingdom animal welfare charity that was instrumental in banning the practice of fox hunting in Britain, has lent its support to the Vancouver Human Society and the VHS campaign against calf-roping at the Calgary Stampede – what is in fact an unadulterated exercise in brutality. This comes as a coalition of MPs in the United Kingdom tabled a motion in the House of Commons condemning rodeos and calling upon the Canadian government to “take steps to end the immense cruelty to animals in events such as calf-roping, which is practiced at rodeos including the Calgary Stampede.” The League is also asking UK travel agencies to stop promoting package tours to the Calgary Stampede, saying that “Canada is a beautiful country with so much to do, there really is no need to be abusing animals in this way for entertainment. We know from our opinion polls that British tourists vote with their feet on other animal welfare issues such as bullfighting, and we will be persuading them to do the same with the rodeo.”

Also earning first time nominations were Mad Men’s January Jones and Christina Hendricks and Conan O’Brien for the short lived Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. Jane Lynch was nominated for her work on Glee as well. But again with Monk’s Tony Shalhoub: seriously, who does the man sleep with?
