Parminder Singh Peter Bassi and Ravinder Robbie Bassi accused of violently assaulting a gay couple in downtown Vancouver on the evening of June 12th did not appear in court this morning, defence attorneys for the brothers, 30 and 27 years old respectively appearing on their behalf, requesting that the twosome’s next court date be moved to August 9th. The two have been charged with assault causing bodily harm in connection to the sadistic bashing of David Holtzman and Peter Regier outside the couple’s downtown townhouse the same evening it is alleged that the accused were returning from an
Ultimate Fighting Championship. Holtzman and Regier, as well as numerous supporters, were in court Monday morning, Holtzman saying that “we want justice. But we really want the final outcome to be safe and healthy neighbourhoods. I think for certain kinds of events at certain times, we need an obvious police presence on street corners and neighbourhoods, and we know the city and police are taking this seriously.” It has yet to be determined whether an additional hate crime charge will be brought against the brothers.

The piece, written by Bruce Arthur, is a must read: sad (can a terrible tragedy be less?), but ultimately remarkably hopeful, a reminder of the gift that is resilience.
